Flowery Branch's Lantern Parade Has a New Front Porch This Year

When Flowery Branch last lit its Christmas tree, The Porch on Main was brand new. Georgia Trend reports it opened in November 2025 inside a 100-year-old building at 5603 Main Street that a series of retailers had occupied before it. Several of the names there now came later. Prime + Provisions, Arpeggio Coffee & Bakery, The Branch Social's grand opening and Haul Star Vintage Exchange all arrived in 2026.

The holiday calendar itself is familiar. The Gainesville Times ran a photo of a Flowery Branch tree-lighting ceremony from 2017, and the lantern parade dates back to at least 2024. What's new is the block around them. The Lantern Parade on November 20 will be the first one since those four arrivals, and that changes how the evening fits together.

What 5603 Main Street Became in Twelve Months

The Porch is run by Discover Lake Lanier, the Lake Lanier Convention & Visitors Bureau, as a tourism project that mixes visitor services with small local businesses and Georgia Grown and Georgia Made products. The Gainesville Times identified the property as the former Southern Grace building when it previewed the renovation in October 2025. Madison Mahoney, a vice president at Discover Lake Lanier, explained the idea to Georgia Trend:

"This unique setting promotes area tourism while serving as an incubator for local small businesses."

Here's how the current lineup came together over the year:

Date What opened or happened
November 2025 The Porch on Main opens
March 1, 2026 Prime + Provisions Butcher & Market grand opening
March 10, 2026 Arpeggio Coffee & Bakery opening event
May 12, 2026 Ribbon cutting for the Discover Lake Lanier Welcome Center
June 5, 2026 The Branch Social Wine & Market grand-opening weekend kicks off
September 15, 2026 Haul Star Vintage Exchange's pop-up expected to open

Each business serves a different part of a holiday evening. Prime + Provisions sells premium cuts, ready-to-eat meals and gourmet foods. Everything on Arpeggio's menu is sourdough. La Casita Ice Cream makes traditional Mexican ice creams and paletas, and you can eat them on The Porch's furnished patios. Discover Lake Lanier Gifts & Groceries sells Georgia-made gifts plus everyday basics like bread, milk and eggs. Haul Star sells vintage clothing, jewelry and bags for men and women, which makes it an unusual gift stop on a street better known for food.

The Parade Is Built for Walking In

The Lantern Parade is set up for people to join, not just watch. The City's sign-up page asks for decorated golf carts, people dressed as holiday characters, dancers, businesses and anyone who wants to walk with a lantern. The rules are short:

  • Golf carts only, with no cars or floats
  • Meet around 5 p.m. at United Methodist Church, 5212 Spring St., where groups line up on site
  • Lanterns are provided, or bring your own
  • The parade starts at 6:30 p.m., and the tree lighting follows right after
  • No handing out candy along the route

The format has been building for a few years. In 2024, the Cherokee Bluff Band told its students that the "Flowery Branch Christmas Wishes Festival & Lantern Parade" was on Friday, November 22. Students rode a bus to the Methodist Church line-up and then walked a route downtown. Last year, AccessNorthGA listed "Christmas Wishes & the Lantern Parade" with food trucks, live music and a drone show.

This year, the City's event listing places the Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration in the Flowery Branch Commercial Historic District at 5310 Railroad Ave., 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, November 20. The Porch's own calendar shows a shorter window and a Main Street address for the same night, so the City's page is the one to go by.

Friday, November 20, Hour by Hour

A parade that lines up at 5 and a tree lighting that runs until 9 add up to a long evening outdoors in late November. That stretch of time is where the new storefronts matter most. Here's one way to plan the day using businesses with posted hours:

  1. Lunch before the crowds. Caroline's on Main, 5518 Main St., is open until 2 p.m. on weekdays, so it works for an early meal but not dinner.
  2. Early afternoon at The Porch. The Branch Social Wine & Market opens at 2 p.m. on Fridays and serves Georgia wines alongside specialty snacks from its market.
  3. Around 5 p.m., head to Spring Street if you're walking or driving a golf cart in the parade.
  4. 6:30 p.m., parade and tree lighting on Railroad Avenue.
  5. After the lights. The Branch Social stays open until 9 p.m. on Fridays, the same time the City's celebration ends. Peyton's Pie Company, 5609 Main St., is open even later, until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Between them, these spots have posted hours that cover the whole celebration, all within a short walk of the tree. If you're driving in, the City's listing names several public parking areas: Pine Street at City Hall, the gravel lot across from City Hall, Railroad Avenue in front of the Police Department, parallel spots on Mitchell Street and Railroad Avenue, the corner of Snelling Avenue just over the tracks, and the empty lot at Chestnut Street.

Thursdays Now Have a Second Stop

The Porch also pairs well with the season's Thursday events. The City's Winter Farmers Market is held at the Market Pavilion, 5210 Railroad Ave., from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., with local vendors, seasonal goods and live music.

Thursday Winter Farmers Market, 5210 Railroad Ave. The Branch Social, 5603 Main St.
November 12 3:30–6:30 p.m. Open until 9 p.m.
November 19 3:30–6:30 p.m. Monthly Wine Tasting, 5:30–8:30 p.m.
December 10 3:30–6:30 p.m., during the Christmas Market Open until 9 p.m.
December 17 3:30–6:30 p.m. Monthly Wine Tasting, 5:30–8:30 p.m.

On two of those Thursdays, the wine tasting starts an hour before the market closes, so one trip downtown covers both. The market page describes the series as running on the second and fourth Thursdays of November through April, but November 19 and December 17 are third Thursdays. Check with the City before going on either of those dates.

December 10 Folds Two Events Into One Evening

On December 10, the Flowery Branch Christmas Market takes over the same pavilion from 3:30 to 7 p.m. The City lists free carriage rides, visits with Santa and Santa letter writing, holiday characters, gifts and treats from local vendors, food trucks and live holiday music. The winter market is also on the calendar that day at the same address, so expect one bigger, busier evening.

It's also the easiest night of the season to do most of your gift shopping in one place. The market vendors are at 5210 Railroad Ave., and The Porch is a short walk away on Main Street, where Gifts & Groceries focuses on Georgia Grown and Georgia Made products and Prime + Provisions sells gourmet foods for anyone hosting later in the month. If you're writing a Santa letter with a child, start at the pavilion before the line forms, then walk to La Casita or Arpeggio afterward.

One more tenant listed on The Porch's website is Baby Bell Candy Apple, known for caramel apples. The City's business listing, though, shows its own storefront at 5527 Main St. as "opening soon," so check its page before planning a stop around it.
